Job Description

A manual machinist operates manual machine tools like lathes, milling machines, and grinders to fabricate, modify, or repair precision parts and instruments, often working from blueprints and specifications. They are responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining these machines, ensuring accuracy and quality through measurements and inspections. 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Reading and Interpreting Blueprints:Manual machinists must be able to understand technical drawings, schematics, and other specifications to determine the necessary machining operations. 
  • Setting Up and Operating Machines:This includes selecting appropriate tools, setting machine parameters, and securing workpieces for machining. 
  • Performing Machining Operations:Using various tools like lathes, milling machines, and grinders, they shape and cut materials to precise dimensions. 
  • Ensuring Quality and Accuracy:This involves using precision measuring instruments like calipers and micrometers to inspect finished parts and ensure they meet the required tolerances. 
    • Maintaining Machinery:Performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on machines to keep them in good working order. 
    • Adhering to Safety Protocols:Working safely in a machine shop environment, following all safety procedures and guidelines. 
    • Reworking and Calibrating Parts:As needed, they may rework or calibrate parts to meet specifications or repair defects. 
    • Providing Documentation and Correspondence:Maintaining records of work performed and communicating with supervisors or other team members. 
Essential Skills and Knowledge:
    • Technical Drawing Interpretation: A strong understanding of blueprints and technical drawings is crucial. 
    • Machine Tool Operation: Proficiency in setting up and operating manual machine tools (lathes, milling machines, grinders, etc.). 
    • Precision Measurement: Ability to use precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges. 
    • Material Knowledge: Understanding of different materials and their properties, including metals and plastics. 
    • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot issues with machines or parts and find solutions. 
    • Attention to Detail: Manual machinists work with very tight tolerances, requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. 
    • Safety Consciousness: Working in a machine shop requires a strong commitment to safety protocols.
